Basic Set (1993)
gives us
1. Black Lotus
2. Mox Pearl
3. Mox Jet
4. Mox Emerald (wasn't at all popular, but I'll include it anyway)
5. Mox Ruby
6. Mox Sapphire
7. Sol Ring
8. Icy Manipulator
9. Nevinyrral’s Disk
10. Black Vise
That was the easy one. I've been a huge fan of both Time Vault and Illusionary Mask but doubt that they fit the list.
Unfortunatly, all the efficient mana artifacts are "top" and use up some space on the list that could be filled with other artifacts if you combine those to "the Moxen".
Arabian Nights:
11. Ring of Ma’rûf
While AN has some noteworthy artifacts, in comparison to modern cards, they are somewhat narrow. I've chosen the Ring of Ma’rûf as it introduced a game-breaking mechanic very early in the game.
Antiquities, the first artifact expansion:
12. Candelabra of Tawnos
13. Millstone (this was a famous card that named the milling mechanic)
14. Tawnos’s Coffin the second card to have the phasing ability (keyworded later) and a top tournament card as far as I can remember.
15. Triskelion
From the book series:
16. Mana Crypt
Legends:
17. Mirror Universe
Ice Age:
18. Jester’s Cap
19. Zuran Orb
Homelands:
20. Serrated Arrows
Alliances:
21. Helm of Obedience - this and Deadly Insects were the end to the creatureless decks (that were gaining popularity at the time).
Mirage:
22. Phyrexian Dreadnought a 12/12 (biggest creature until then) for just . I still remember the anouncement that previewed Mirage in the Duellist with this text.
Tempest:
23. Altar of Dementia
24. Sapphire Medallion - one of a 5 card cycle to lower spell costs, this was the most interesting because blue had no real mana acceleration.
25. Scroll Rack
Stronghold:
26. Ensnaring Bridge - back since 7th, this is an easy way against too many creatures.
27. Mox Diamond
Exodus:
28. Coat of Arms
also, Erratic Portal and Mindless Automaton get mentioned honorably.
Urza's Saga:
(Oh, where to stop, it has so many strong artifacts)
29. Claws of Gix
30. Karn, Silver Golem
31. Voltaic Key
Urza's Legacy:
32. Memory Jar
Urza's Destiny:
33. Masticore
34. Metalworker
35. Powder Keg
Mercadian Masques:
36. Power Matrix
Nemesis:
37. Predator, Flagship
Planeshift:
38. Draco - biggest flying creature.
Apocalypse:
39. Legacy Weapon
Odyssey:
40. Mirari
Mirrodin:
for the whole block, the Kaldra set gets 'honorable mention'.
41. Chrome Mox
42. Seat of the Synod - while the idea of combining artifact and another card type has been done before, this land cycle spoiled the T2 (Standard) tournament scene for some people. Atogs (like me) just discovered new sources of food...
43. Solemn Simulacrum
Darksteel:
44. Æther Vial
45. Arcbound Ravager
46. Darksteel Colossus
47. Sword of Fire and Ice
Fifth Dawn:
48. Crucible of Worlds
Champions of Kamigawa:
49. Sensei’s Divining Top
Betrayers of Kamigawa:
50. Umezawa’s Jitte
scorce wotc
